Sincerity: Yohta Matsuoka

5 July - 25 August 2024
To this day, I have been deeply involved in graffiti and mural art, engaging in creative activities within the scene while also genuinely confronting fine art itself. This current series combines elements of graffiti art with the composition of still-life paintings, thus navigating between the academic and the non-academic. I am simultaneously a sincere representation on canvas of the extremes of classical and contemporary, fine art and street art

Yohta Matsuoka is a Japanese artist living and working in Tokyo, Japan. His work applies the composition techniques of abstract expressionism, involving a dynamic use of colour and pattern. with the primary focus of Yohta’s work has been creating still life paintings, arranging objects on monochrome canvases in a way that evokes a fundamentality of being.

Matsuoka’s work is concerned with perspective, challenging his viewers to consider the arrangement of objects and how this can transform their original form and meaning into something new and unexpected. The visual patterns he creates demonstrate a mastery of colour and compositional techniques, reflecting his artistic vision and offering a fresh perspective on the beauty of everyday objects.

Throughout his career, Matsuoka has executed various large-scale murals in Japan and overseas, sometimes working under the moniker JON JON GREEN. His skilful application of abstract expressionist techniques allows him to capture the energy and vibrancy of the Japanese street scene.

My passion for drawing began with copying characters from cartoon characters, eventually, I started drawing still lifes as an academic pursuit. While I devoted myself to drawing every day, my other approach to expression was through copying and painting graffiti on the streets.

Even after entering art university, I studied painting and design during the day. When night fell, I would head out into the city, tagging and leaving messages, sometimes even gluing self-made objects onto street corners, confronting and expressing my inner desires.
