By placing the eyes onto a silhouette of another person, whose race, sex, hairstyle, or body shape differs from those of the original, Matsuyama’s portraits reflect anonymity, and the uncertain veracity of information on the Internet

Born in Shizuoka 1973, Shigeki Matsuyama is a multimedia artist based in Kanagawa, Japan. Having previously worked in the product illustration and advertising field, Matsuyama held a solo exhibition ‘UNEASINESS’ in Tokyo, after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Garnering motivation from the show’s success, he has since been creating exciting conceptual work interested in modern people, and the effects of today’s media on their self-image and trust.
Shigeki’s work explores a fascination with the compelling - if slightly disturbing - inconspicuousness of the virtual world. Drawing inspiration from the everyday world, Matsuyama’s signature dazzle camouflage (a reference to the camouflage used on ships in World War I) turns his subject matter into something otherworldly.
