Diogo Machado's work is a vibrant fusion of influences from the realms of cartoons, video games, and the dynamic skate culture of the 1980s, while simultaneously paying homage to the ancient tradition of Portuguese tiles. Machado imbues and reinterprets these elements to craft a distinctive cartoon style that is uniquely his own, with modern and even pop motifs that can only be seen up close. His compositions often incorporate recognizable features, such as the hands of classic characters or the eyes of vintage cartoon figures, seamlessly integrated to create a cohesive visual language.
The fragmented series explores a form of deconstruction. Here, the act of cutting and removing parts of the artwork introduces a physical fragmentation that is both deliberate and transformative. This process creates negative space and reshapes the original form, offering a new perspective on the medium. It’s about a tangible sense of disruption, echoing the pixelated disassembly but in a more tactile and physical manner. This interplay between the solid and the void, the constructed and the deconstructed, acts as an enabler to appreciate both its form and the intricate process behind its creation.
